Pohela Boishakh is undoubtedly one of the most enjoyable occasion and the first day of Bengali calendar and is celebrated as the Bangla New Year, not only in West Bengal but also in Bangladesh and among’st the Bengali communities living in Indian states of Tripura and Assam. Boishakh is the name of the first month. People are dressed up in traditional clothes and homes are decorated with beautiful rangoli with a white Swastik placed at the centre and red pot containing holy water and mango leaves. The day is spend visiting relatives, friends and neighbors. Prepration of special foods to serve the guests is also done. Apart from the local activities and processions that takes place during this festival, one of the biggest fair is organized by the Government of West Bengal and is known as the Bangla Sangit Mela.
